"Granbury's Texas Brigade Presents - "
Laura Anne Ham is the great-great-great granddaughter of Private James I. Newman, Company C, 12th Louisiana Infantry. Company C under the command of its organizer Captain John Abernathy Dixon was known as the "Southern Sentinels". The 12th Louisiana infantry, was officialy
enrolled in the Confederate States Army August 18, 1861 and sent to the banks of the Mississippi River near Island No. 10. Most of the men were captured there and
after being exchanged the regiment was re-organized on May 10, 1862. It fought at Champion's Hill and Jackson Mississippi in defense of Vicksburg and later fought
in the Atlanta Campaign and Hoods invasion of Tennessee. The regiment was surrendered April 26, 1865.
Its commanders were
Colonel Thomas M. Scott; Lieutenant Colonels James A. Boyd, Wade H. Hough, Noel L. Nelson, and
Thomas C. Standifer; and Majors John C. Knott and Henry V. McCain.
Laura is a college student and currently working as a pharmacy technician. She held positions at Kingwood College as a member of Phi Theta Kappa
and the assistant editor of the school newspaper. Her hobbies include theatre, photography, and drawing.
Laura is the daughter of Alvin and Nancy Ham
and the granddaughter of Earl and Mary Louise Ham (both deceased) and Andre and Simonne Durieux,.
