  • Appointed Secretary of War on December 22, 1838.
  • Conducted campaign against Indians, 1839
  • Resigned and returned to Kentucky, 1840
  • Settled on a large plantation he named China Grove in Brazoria County, Texas 1843
  • Commanded 1st Texas Rifle Volunteers in Mexican-American War
  • Returned to U S Army as Major 1849
  • Became colonel, 2nd U.S. Cavalry, 1855
  • Promoted to brigadier general, 1857.
  • Took command, Department of the Pacific 1860
  • Resigned his commission, April 9, 1861
  • Appointed General, CSA, commander of Western Department by Jefferson Davis, May 30, 1861
  • Launched surprise attack against Grant in Tennessee April, 1862.
  • Died, Battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862
  • Buried, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Reinterred, Texas State Cemetery in Austin, 1867
