Commanded 1st Texas Rifle Volunteers in Mexican-American War
Returned to U S Army as Major 1849
Became colonel, 2nd U.S. Cavalry, 1855
Promoted to brigadier general, 1857.
Took command, Department of the Pacific 1860
Resigned his commission, April 9, 1861
Appointed General, CSA, commander of Western Department by Jefferson Davis, May 30, 1861
Launched surprise attack
against Grant in Tennessee April, 1862.
Died, Battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862
Buried, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Reinterred, Texas State Cemetery in Austin, 1867
