  • Born Sep. 27, 1838, Bentonsport, Iowa Territory
  • Obtained A.B. degree, Wesleyan University, 1859
  • Joined the Texas Rangers, Spring of 1860
  • Recovered Cynthia Ann Parker from Comanche raiding party, December 1860
  • Joined Confederate Army as a member of Waco company, 1861
  • Promoted to brigadier general in early 1864
  • Surrendered at Jackson, Miss., in May 1865
  • Elected McLennan County Sherrif, 1873
  • Helped write the Texas Constitution of 1876
  • Elected State Senator 1880
  • Elected Governor of Texas 1886
  • Became President of Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) 1891
  • Elected Commander, Texas Division, United Confederate Veterans 1893
  • Died suddenly at his home in College Station on Jan. 3, 1898
  • Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Texas.
